Don't lick your cracked / chapped lips

Why we are not encouraged to lick our drying / cracked / chapped lips?

Chapped lips or Cracked lips is a condition whereby the lips become dry and possibly cracked. It may be caused by the evaporation of moisture.

Often the lips become dry because the layer of oil that is naturally produced by the body to coat the lips is removed or is lacking. So by licking it with your saliva it will make your thin layer of protection vanish, maybe because our saliva is designed with enzyme in it that can break down food including our oil protection on the lips.

Saliva evaporates quickly, leaving lips drier than before you licked them. If you tend to lick your lips, avoid flavored lip balm — which may tempt you to lick your lips even more.
